What Is This Behavior?
Dogs eating cat poop is a common problem. Vets call this “coprophagia.” It is gross to us. But to a dog, it is normal. Dogs like the smell. They also like the taste. The cat box is like a treat jar to them.1
This can be dangerous. Cat poop can have germs. The litter can also hurt your dog. Some litter swells up inside the tummy. This can block the gut. It is very bad. This report tells you why dogs do it. It also tells you how to stop it.3
Why Do They Do It?
Dogs do not do this to be bad. They have reasons.
1. It Tastes Good
Cat food has lots of meat. Cats do not digest all of it. So, their poop still smells like food. Dogs have great noses. They smell the protein in the poop. They want to eat it. It is like a snack to them.1
2.It Is Instinct
Long ago, wild dogs ate poop. It gave them vitamins. It is also a mom thing. Mother dogs clean their babies. They eat the baby dog’s poop. This keeps the nest clean. It hides the smell from bad animals. Some dogs still have this urge. They want to “clean” the litter box.3
3. Medical Reasons
Sometimes a dog is sick. A vet should check your dog.
- Hunger: Some diseases make dogs very hungry. Diabetes is one. Cushing’s disease is another. The dog feels like it is starving. It will eat anything.6
- Missing Nutrients: If a dog’s gut does not work right, it misses vitamins. The dog eats poop to get them back. Vitamin B is a big one.3
- Worms: Worms steal the dog’s food. The dog gets hungry and eats poop.1
4. Boredom and Stress
Dogs get bored. If they have nothing to do, they look for fun. The litter box is fun for them.
- Anxiety: Scared dogs chew things. Some eat poop to feel better.3
- Fear: Did you yell at your dog for pooping inside? They might get scared. They might eat the poop to hide it. They do not want you to be mad.13
The Dangers of Cat Litter
Eating the poop is bad. Eating the litter is worse. The type of litter matters.
1. Clumping Clay
This is the most common litter. It is made of clay. It clumps when it gets wet.
- It Swells: Inside a dog, it gets wet. It swells up big. It can get 15 times bigger.14
- It Blocks the Gut: The clay turns into a rock. It gets stuck. Food cannot pass. This is a blockage. It can kill the dog. A vet must cut it out.17
2. Crystal Litter
This looks like clear beads. It dries things out.
- Dehydration: It soaks up water in the dog’s gut. The dog can get very thirsty and sick.8
3.Corn, Wheat, and Paper
These are natural. They are safer but still risky.
- Gas: Corn and wheat can rot in the tummy. This makes gas. The tummy can swell and hurt.7
Litter Risks
| Type | What is it? | Risk | What happens? |
| Clumping Clay | Clay | Very High | Blocks the gut. Very dangerous. |
| Crystals | Silica | Medium | Dries out the dog. |
| Corn/Wheat | Plants | Low/Medium | Gas and tummy pain. |
| Paper | Paper | Low | Usually passes through. |
Worms and Germs
Cat poop has bugs in it. These bugs can make dogs sick. They can make you sick too.
1. Tiny Parasites
Toxoplasma:
Cats carry this bug. It comes out in their poop.
- Fresh vs. Old: Fresh poop is safer. The bugs need 1 to 5 days to get strong. Old poop is the worst.4
- For Humans: Dogs do not spread this in their own poop. But a dog can lick you after eating cat poop. This can give you the bug.23
Giardia:
This bug causes bad diarrhea. It smells very bad. It makes the dog lose weight.1
2. Worms
Roundworms:
Dogs eat the eggs in the poop. The worms hatch inside. They grow big. They look like spaghetti.25
Hookworms:
These worms bite the gut. They drink blood. They can make the dog very weak.1
Tapeworms:
These come from fleas. If a dog eats a flea in the litter, they get worms. They look like rice grains.28
Bad Bacteria
Cat poop has bad germs.
1. Salmonella
Cats can carry this. It does not always hurt the cat. But it can hurt the dog.
- Signs: The dog gets sick 6 to 72 hours later. They vomit. They have bloody poop. They get a fever.29
- Spreading It: The dog can spread germs for weeks. Wash your hands.31
What to Do Right Away
Did your dog eat from the box? Do not panic. Check these things.
1. How Bad Is It?
- Size: A small dog eating litter is very bad. A big dog might be okay.19
- Litter Type: Clumping clay is the most dangerous. Paper is less dangerous.15
- Meds: Is the cat on medicine? The dog ate that too.6
2. Check Your Dog
- Feel the Tummy: Press gently. It should be soft. If it is hard or hurts, go to the vet.35
- Check Gums: Gums should be pink. If they are pale, go to the vet.38
3. Watch for Signs
When to Call the Vet
| Sign | When? | What to do? |
| Vomiting | 0–24 Hours | No food for 12 hours. Call vet if blood shows up.39 |
| Diarrhea | 12–72 Hours | Feed bland food. Call vet if it lasts.39 |
| No Poop | 24–48 Hours | Go to Vet. This means a blockage.17 |
| Swollen Tummy | 2–24 Hours | Go to Vet. This is very bad.36 |
| Straining | 24+ Hours | Go to Vet. The litter is stuck.41 |
Treatments
1. Making the Dog Vomit
Only do this if the dog just ate it.
- Ask a Vet First: It can be risky.
- Hydrogen Peroxide: This can make dogs throw up. But be careful. It can hurt the tummy. Do not do it if the dog is sleepy or has a flat face (like a Pug).42
2. Fixing a Blockage
If litter is stuck, the vet helps.
- X-Rays: The vet takes a picture of the tummy. Clay shows up white.44
- Fluids: They give water under the skin or in a vein. This helps move the mass.31
- Surgery: Sometimes they must cut the tummy open. This takes the rock out.18
3. Home Care
If the dog is acting fine, help them poop.
- Pumpkin: Give plain canned pumpkin. Not the pie mix. It has fiber. It helps push the poop out.45
- Dose: Give 1 to 4 spoons with food.47
- Warning: Do not feed if the dog is vomiting. It makes it worse.49
4. Making Poop Taste Bad
You can put stuff in the cat’s food.
- Products: Things like For-Bid make poop taste bitter.
- How it works: The dog takes a bite. It tastes awful. The dog stops eating it.50
How to Stop It
Prevention is best. Keep the dog out.
1. Block the Box
- Gates: Put a baby gate up. Keep it off the floor a bit. The cat goes under. The dog stays out.34
- High Spots: Put the box on a table. Dogs cannot reach it.19
- Special Boxes: Buy a top-entry box. The dog cannot get its head in.34
- Clean It: Scoop the poop right away. No poop means no snack.54
2. Train the Dog
Teach the command “Leave It.”
- Step 1: Put a treat in your hand. Close your fist. Let the dog sniff.
- Step 2: Wait. When the dog backs away, say “Yes!” Give the treat.
- Step 3: Do this with the box. Walk by the box. Say “Leave It.” If the dog looks at you, give a treat.56
3. Keep Them Busy
A bored dog gets into trouble.
- Games: Use puzzle toys. Hide food in the house. Let them hunt for kibble.59
- Toys: Give them a Kong toy with peanut butter. It keeps them busy.62
- Exercise: Walk the dog more. A tired dog is a good dog.6
